Germany's latest onshore wind auction marked a historic milestone, awarding contracts for nearly 3 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, the highest ever recorded. The Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) received 239 bids totaling 2,961 megawatts (MW) for the available 2,709 MW, making it the first oversubscribed auction since February 2022. Successful bids ranged from €0.0573 to €0.0735 per kilowatt-hour, with an average price of €0.0733, just below the maximum ceiling. This surge in interest is attributed to an increase in bids with older permits. The German government aims for renewables to account for 80% of electricity consumption by 2030, necessitating about 115 GW of onshore wind capacity. The agency will set the volume for the next auction in November by October 18, 2024.
