Severe monsoon rains in Maharashtra's Marathwada region have resulted in at least 53 fatalities and affected around 22 lakh farmers, according to reports. The heavy downfalls, particularly from September 1 to 6, damaged over 18 lakh hectares of Kharif crops across several districts, with Parbhani reporting the highest damage. The Maharashtra government has initiated assessments of the destruction, having completed evaluations on approximately 39.65% of the affected areas. Additionally, 1,269 animals have died due to the rains, and numerous homes, both concrete and mud, have been partially or completely destroyed. Meanwhile, in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, a cyclonic depression starting August 29 led to severe flooding, affecting one million people and resulting in 35 fatalities, predominantly among lower caste Christian communities. Authorities in both regions are facing criticism for inadequate disaster management and assistance for the affected populations.
