Leeds Carpet Trader Mike Smith Dies Age 79

Mike Smith, the beloved Yorkshire carpet trader and founder of Mike's Carpets, has died at the age of 79 from heart failure after a six-month illness. Starting his business in the 1970s at Leeds Kirkgate Market, he became a household name through his popular TV adverts filmed at his market stall and later his shop in Armley during the 1980s and 90s. Known for his warmth, humor, and business acumen, Smith built a carpet empire that at its peak included 13 outlets across the region. Following a fire at Leeds Market, he expanded his business and eventually retired from carpet sales eight years ago to focus on property investments.
