Austria's far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), led by Herbert Kickl, has won its first national election with 29.1% of the vote, surpassing the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) at 26.2%. This historic victory comes amid rising concerns over immigration, inflation, and government responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. The FPÖ capitalized on discontent with the current government, increasing its support by thirteen points since the 2019 elections. Despite the win, forming a coalition remains difficult, as the ÖVP and other parties refuse to partner with Kickl due to his controversial remarks and far-right affiliations. The Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) trails in third place with 20.4%. As Kickl seeks to become chancellor, his party's past scandals and current positions pose significant challenges for future governance.
