Wicked: For Good to Feature Dorothy Only in Distant Shots

The upcoming film Wicked: For Good, a sequel to 2024's Wicked, will feature Dorothy Gale largely from a distance or from behind, with her face never clearly shown. Cynthia Erivo, who stars as Elphaba, explained this choice allows audiences to keep their own image of Dorothy, famously portrayed by Judy Garland in 1939. Ariana Grande, reprising her role as Glinda, noted a playful tension between Glinda and Dorothy, highlighting Glinda's subtle shadiness in their interactions. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film will explore the story of Elphaba and Glinda against the backdrop of Dorothy's presence, which impacts their journey without making her a central character. The film also introduces new elements not present in the stage musical, including Glinda's wedding and original songs for both leads, enhancing the narrative depth. Wicked: For Good is scheduled for release in theaters on November 21, 2025.
