Experts Dispute Cloud Seeding Role in Deadly Texas Floods
In the aftermath of the devastating Texas Hill Country floods that claimed over 80 lives, conspiracy theories alleging that human activities like cloud seeding caused the extreme weather have circulated widely on social media and even among some political figures. Meteorologists and experts have firmly debunked these claims, explaining that cloud seeding can only enhance rainfall by a small margin and cannot create storms or floods of such magnitude. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reports that cloud seeding operations cover about one-sixth of Texas, aiming to enhance rainfall and suppress hail over millions of acres, but these efforts are incapable of controlling severe weather events like hurricanes or major floods. Despite these facts, misinformation continues to spread, fueled by political rhetoric and social media posts that label weather disasters as artificially engineered. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and meteorologists emphasize that the energy involved in storms far exceeds human capabilities to manipulate them. This situation highlights how natural disasters often become entangled with misinformation, complicating public understanding and response.
