BBC investigates Arabic service over antisemitism allegations

The BBC will appoint an independent figure to investigate its Arabic-language service following reports that several contributors expressed antisemitic views and support for Hamas. This move comes after media exposés, particularly by The Telegraph, revealed that freelance journalists regularly featured on BBC Arabic had posted violent antisemitic content online, including calls for violence against Jews and praise for terrorist attacks. BBC Chairman Dr. Samir Shah stated the review will be independent and published in full, also encompassing the broadcaster’s broader coverage of the Israel-Gaza conflict. The controversy centers on contributors such as Samer Elzaenen and Ahmed Qannan, whose social media posts and public statements have drawn widespread criticism. Shah emphasized the importance of impartiality and thorough examination to address concerns about bias in Middle East reporting. The BBC maintains that the individuals in question are not staff members but acknowledges the seriousness of the allegations.
