Lightning Strike Kills 14 at Ugandan Refugee Camp
A tragic lightning strike at a church in the Palabek refugee camp in Uganda has resulted in at least 14 fatalities, including 13 children and one adult, during a prayer gathering on Saturday evening. The incident occurred as around 50 people sought shelter from a heavy storm, with many of the victims being from the South Sudanese Nuer community. Local officials reported that 34 others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment. The Ugandan government, in cooperation with UNHCR and other agencies, is providing assistance to the survivors and handling the logistics of returning the deceased to their families. Uganda has a history of deadly lightning strikes, particularly affecting schools and makeshift structures that lack proper lightning conductors. Recent years have seen similar incidents, with previous tragedies claiming numerous lives in the region.
