A fire at London's historic Somerset House, which houses priceless artworks including pieces by Van Gogh and Monet, was contained after around 125 firefighters responded to the incident on Saturday. The blaze broke out in the west wing around midday, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported and no artworks were damaged as they are located in a different part of the building. The London Fire Brigade faced challenges due to the building's age and design, requiring technical responses such as creating fire breaks in the roof. Somerset House will remain closed to the public until further notice, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Although the fire disrupted a scheduled breakdancing event, the Courtauld Gallery is expected to reopen soon. Fire crews will continue to monitor the site to extinguish remaining pockets of fire.
