Missing Wisconsin Kayaker Confirms He's Alive

Ryan Borgwardt, a 45-year-old from Wisconsin, is at the center of a bizarre case involving the faking of his own death during a kayaking trip in August. Initially reported missing, he was later discovered to have traveled to Europe after staging his demise, which included capsizing his kayak and fleeing to Canada before boarding a flight overseas. Since November 11, authorities have maintained contact with him, facilitated by a woman speaking Russian, but his exact location remains unknown. Sheriff Mark Podoll indicated that Borgwardt's actions stemmed from personal issues and a life insurance policy worth $375,000 taken out prior to his disappearance. He now faces an obstruction charge, with potential federal charges under consideration. Green Lake County is also seeking restitution for the extensive search efforts, estimated between $35,000 to $40,000.
