Google Tests AI Audio Overviews in Search

Google is testing an AI-powered Audio Overviews feature in Search Labs and the Gemini app, enabling users in the US to generate podcast-style audio summaries of search results using Gemini models. The feature presents a conversational discussion between two AI voices and is designed to provide a hands-free, engaging way to absorb information, especially on unfamiliar topics. Audio Overviews can be enabled through Search Labs, appearing after the 'People also ask' section in search results, and include playback controls, speed adjustment, source links, and user feedback options. The audio is generated on demand, taking up to 40 seconds to produce. Google describes the technology as experimental, cautioning users about possible inaccuracies and actively seeking feedback to improve quality. There are concerns that the feature could reduce traffic to original content creators by providing comprehensive answers within search results.
