Carlsbad Bicyclist Killed by DUI Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested

A bicyclist was fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision on Carlsbad Boulevard early Saturday morning, with the incident occurring around 4:34 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and their identity will be released later by the San Diego Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities arrested 27-year-old Alexander Gendron of Escondido about one mile from the crash site, charging him with leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and vehicular manslaughter. Police utilized witness reports, license plate readers, and drone technology to locate Gendron, who is being held at the Vista Detention Facility. The crash remains under investigation, with alcohol suspected as a contributing factor, and the Carlsbad Police Department is urging anyone with information to contact Traffic Accident Investigator Corporal Matt Bowen. This incident marks the 41st bicycling fatality in Southern California this year and highlights the ongoing vulnerability of cyclists on the road.
