Israel Antiquities Authority Uncovers Rare 'Redemption of Zion' Coin Near Temple Mount
Archaeologists in Jerusalem have uncovered a rare bronze coin from the fourth year of the Jewish Great Revolt against Rome (69-70 CE), shortly before the destruction of the Second Temple. The coin, found near the southwest corner of the Temple Mount, bears the Hebrew inscription "For the Redemption of Zion," marking a shift from earlier coins that read "For the Freedom of Zion," reflecting the rebels' transition from hopeful resistance to a plea for divine intervention amid impending defeat. The obverse side features a goblet, while the reverse depicts a lulav and two etrogim, symbols associated with the Sukkot festival, alongside the inscription "Year Four." This discovery, made by the Israel Antiquities Authority in collaboration with the City of David and Jewish Quarter Reconstruction and Development Company, offers a poignant historical testament to the Jewish people's struggle and spiritual yearning during the revolt's final months. The coin's unearthing has special resonance as it coincides with Tisha B'Av, a day of mourning in Jewish tradition for the destruction of the Temples. Scholars highlight the coin's increased size and weight compared to earlier issues, underscoring its rarity and symbolic significance during this turbulent period.
