The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has announced that the Melnea Cass Recreational Complex in Roxbury will serve as a temporary shelter for migrant families previously sleeping at Logan Airport. The recreation center can host up to 400 people or around 100 families starting from Wednesday. The decision has received mixed reactions from the community. The shelter will cease operations by May 31, allowing the recreation center and pool to reopen in June. Despite having a capacity of 7,500 emergency shelter units, Massachusetts is grappling with over 14,000 families in need, prompting the state to ask for more federal support.
