The United Nations has reported a record 280 aid worker deaths in 2023, a significant increase from the previous year's 118 fatalities, largely due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. More than half of these deaths occurred in Gaza, primarily from airstrikes, with additional fatalities in Sudan and South Sudan. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that 2024 could be even deadlier, with 172 aid worker deaths already recorded by August. UN officials, including Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and acting humanitarian chief Joyce Msuya, condemned the normalization of violence against aid workers and called for greater accountability from perpetrators.
