2-Year-Old Dies from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound in Port St. Lucie

A 2-year-old boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on Tuesday night. The incident occurred in a home where the child's mother and several family members were present, and the gun, owned by the mother's fiancé, was found unsecured in the master bedroom. Police Chief Leo Niemczyk emphasized the need for firearms to be properly secured in homes with children, warning that parents should never assume young children cannot access guns. After the shooting, the child was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed so far. Authorities seized two handguns from the residence as part of their inquiry.
