Former Minnesota Rep. Mary Murphy Passes Away

Mary Murphy, a former Minnesota state representative and the longest-serving female legislator in the state's history, has passed away at the age of 85 following a stroke and subsequent complications. She served from 1977 to 2022 and was known for championing causes such as the minimum wage for tipped employees and supporting juvenile correction facilities. Murphy was also a history and social studies teacher at Duluth Central High School. Her passing was announced by House Speaker Melissa Hortman, who had earlier communicated that Murphy had been moved to hospice care. Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, highlighting her significant contributions to the Northland. Murphy's legislative achievements included funding for community projects and supporting the Northern Lights Express rail line.
