Cal State Channel Islands Professor Indicted for Assaulting Federal Agents with Tear Gas
Jonathan Caravello, a 37-year-old math professor at California State University Channel Islands, has been federally indicted for assaulting U.S. Border Patrol agents by throwing a tear gas canister during a July 10 protest at Glass House Farms, a marijuana farm in Camarillo, California. The protest coincided with a large immigration raid under President Donald Trump's administration, which resulted in the arrest of more than 300 undocumented workers, including gang members and terrorists, and was marked by violent clashes where protesters threw rocks and obstructed federal agents. During crowd control efforts, law enforcement deployed tear gas to protect agents, and Caravello allegedly chased and threw a tear gas canister back at the officers, for which he faces up to 20 years in prison. The incident also involved protesters attempting to block federal agents' departure by using their bodies and vehicles, and tragically, one worker died fleeing the raid. Caravello, who was released on a $15,000 bond, is expected to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Constitutional expert Jonathan Turley noted that at least 14 child workers were found during the operation, highlighting the broader issues involved in the raid.
