England Midfielder Angel Gomes Joins Marseille After Rejecting Premier League Offers
England international Angel Gomes has decided to join Marseille on a free transfer after his contract with Lille expired, rejecting interest from Premier League clubs including Tottenham, West Ham, and Brighton, as well as offers from Germany and Italy. Gomes, who came through Manchester United's academy and made a handful of first-team appearances before moving to Lille in 2020, agreed to a three-year deal with Marseille attracted by the prospect of Champions League football and the opportunity to reunite with former United teammate Mason Greenwood. Despite limited appearances in the latter half of the last Ligue 1 season due to injury, Gomes made over 130 appearances for Lille and was the joint-leading assist provider in the 2023/24 campaign. The 24-year-old midfielder, capped four times for England, expressed gratitude to Lille and emphasized the club's impact on his development. Gomes has been praised for his football intelligence and passion for the game by England's interim manager Lee Carsley. His move to Marseille represents a continuation of his career in France rather than a return to the Premier League, where he had earlier expressed a dream to one day return but currently prioritizes consistent top-level football.
