Karnataka to Enforce Strict Speed Regulations

Starting August 1, 2023, the Karnataka police will enforce a new regulation that mandates filing FIRs against drivers exceeding 130 kmph for rash and dangerous driving. This measure aims to curb the high incidence of fatal accidents, which are attributed 90% to over-speeding. Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Road Safety), highlighted that 43,780 road accidents occurred between April 2023 and March 2024, resulting in 11,611 deaths and 51,207 injuries. The enforcement will apply to all roads in Karnataka, with stringent checks using speed laser guns and Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras. Violators face penalties including up to six months of imprisonment or a fine of ₹1,000, or both. The Supreme Court monitoring committee on road safety has urged the state government to take stringent measures following a series of fatal accidents, reinforcing the need for this action.
