Militia attacks in Benue kill 17, escalate violence
Seventeen people were killed in Benue State, Nigeria, following coordinated attacks by suspected armed herders on communities in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas on April 17 and 18. The violence began when a large group of militia invaded the Sankera axis, prompting immediate deployment of police tactical teams who engaged the attackers. Despite these efforts, five people were killed in Gbagir, Ukum, and twelve more in Logo before police could intervene. Among the victims were members of the same family, highlighting the devastating impact on local residents. The attacks are part of a broader pattern of escalating violence between farmers and herders in the region, which has disrupted agriculture and displaced millions in recent years. Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and pledged ongoing pursuit of the perpetrators while calling for community cooperation with security forces.
