Cruise Passengers Stage Hunger Strike Over Refunds

Passengers aboard the SH Diana, a luxury cruise ship operated by Swan Hellenic, staged a hunger strike after mechanical failures forced a cancellation of their planned Antarctic itinerary. The ship, which was on a 21-day voyage from Cape Town to Ushuaia, Argentina, encountered issues with its propulsion motor, resulting in a premature return after 14 days at sea. In response, Swan Hellenic offered a 50% cash refund or a 65% future cruise credit, which some passengers found unsatisfactory, leading to protests including a hunger strike by a small group of Russian guests demanding a full refund. CEO Andrea Zito acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the compensation exceeded legal requirements and highlighted the importance of passenger safety. While most guests accepted the offers, some expressed their grievances during onboard discussions, with a few continuing the hunger strike. The incident underscores the challenges of expedition cruising, especially in unpredictable environments like Antarctica.
