Charlotte Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty After Opossum Set on Fire Video
Cameron Bernard Torrence, a man from Charlotte, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with instigating cruelty to animals, fleeing and eluding arrest, and probation violation after a disturbing video of an opossum being set on fire was posted on his Facebook page. The video, which showed the opossum being doused with lighter fluid and ignited, sparked widespread outrage and was shared thousands of times before being removed. Wildlife officials have identified multiple persons of interest and continue to investigate the case, including a possible second related video. After the video surfaced, North Carolina wildlife officers found the burned opossum on the side of a street in north Charlotte. Torrence was denied bond and is currently in Mecklenburg County jail. Authorities encourage anyone with information to report it anonymously to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
