San Francisco Jury Convicts Man in 2023 Synagogue Hate Crime Shooting
Dmitri Mishin, a 53-year-old man, was convicted by a San Francisco jury on multiple charges including six counts of interference with religious worship with hate crime enhancements and six counts of brandishing an imitation firearm. The charges stem from a February 1, 2023 incident at the Schneerson Center synagogue in the Richmond District, where Mishin entered during a religious class, spoke Russian to attendees, fired seven to eight blank rounds from a replica firearm, and made a statement referencing the Mossad. Investigators found Mishin's social media contained disturbing Nazi-related imagery and a photo of him in a military-style uniform with a swastika, as well as video evidence of him burning an object outside the synagogue prior to the attack. The incident caused lasting trauma in the community, with significant attendance drop and fear among congregants, though no physical injuries occurred. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins emphasized there is no place for antisemitism and highlighted the importance of justice for victims and community healing. Mishin remains in custody awaiting sentencing, as the community continues to reckon with the impact of this hate crime.
