A defect in the fuel hose of a Cathay Pacific Airbus A350 engine caused a fire, forcing a Zurich-bound flight to return to Hong Kong on September 2. Investigations revealed that the steel braided sheath of the fuel hose was ruptured, which could have led to extensive damage if not promptly addressed. Five additional fuel hoses showed signs of wear and tear. The incident prompted Hong Kong’s Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) to recommend that Rolls-Royce, the engine manufacturer, develop new inspection requirements. Following the event, Cathay Pacific inspected its entire fleet of A350s, leading to the replacement of components on 15 aircraft. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued a directive requiring one-time fleet inspections for similar models to prevent further incidents.
