Tennessee State Delays Inaugural HBCU NCAA Hockey Season to 2026-27
Tennessee State University (TSU) has delayed the launch of its men's ice hockey program, originally set to debut in the 2025-26 season, to the 2026-27 season due to financial challenges and the need for additional preparation time. The program, which would be the first NCAA Division I men's hockey team at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), faces obstacles including unmet fundraising goals, unclear practice facility arrangements, and broader financial instability at TSU. Interim President Dwyane Tucker emphasized that the extra year will allow for improved recruiting, facility planning, staff development, and fundraising, aligning with a vision to grow hockey in diverse communities. The delay was made in collaboration with the NHL, the Nashville Predators, College Hockey Inc., and supported by a $250,000 grant from the NHL/NHL Players Association Industry Growth Fund. The Nashville Predators remain committed to assisting TSU in establishing a sustainable and competitive program. No official roster or schedule has yet been released, but the university and its partners continue to work toward making the hockey program a lasting success.
