Indian Airman Laid to Rest After 56 Years
The remains of Thomas Cherian, an Indian Army soldier who died in a plane crash in 1968, were finally laid to rest with military honors in Kerala. Cherian was aboard an Antonov-12 aircraft that crashed over the Rohtang Pass, and he was only 22 years old when the accident occurred. His body, found after 56 years, was brought to Thiruvananthapuram and then to his hometown of Elanthoor for burial. The funeral, attended by dignitaries including Health Minister Veena George, was a solemn event with respects paid by family and officials. The discovery of Cherian’s remains, along with three others, was made possible by the efforts of the Dogra Scouts and the Tiranga Mountain Rescue team. The family expressed a mix of emotions as they prepared to lay him to rest in the family vault at St. Peter’s Orthodox Church, Karoor.
