Manipur CM Seeks Peace Amidst Ongoing Ethnic Violence

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has publicly apologized for the ethnic violence that has ravaged the state since May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands. Singh expressed deep regret for the loss of life and homes, urging communities to embrace reconciliation and 'forgive and forget' past grievances to restore peace by 2025. The conflict primarily involves the Meitei and Kuki communities, exacerbated by disputes over economic benefits and government quotas. Despite ongoing sporadic violence and criticism of his leadership, Singh remains hopeful for progress, citing a recent decline in violence and displacement. The state government is undertaking initiatives for recovery and development, including compensation for displaced families and skill development programs for youth. The central government has also increased security measures and support to aid in stabilization efforts.
