Israel Urged to Accelerate Lebanon Withdrawal

Israeli officials have indicated that the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from southern Lebanon may proceed more slowly than anticipated due to the Lebanese military's delayed deployment, as the 60-day ceasefire period nears its end. Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has urged the US and France to exert pressure on Israel to expedite its withdrawal, emphasizing the need to resolve disputes related to the UN-demarcated Blue Line. UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL) have also called for rapid progress in the IDF's withdrawal, warning against actions that could disrupt the fragile stability in the region. Mikati highlighted that the Lebanese army is ready to fulfill its duties, contingent upon Israel's compliance with the ceasefire terms, which include their withdrawal. As of December 11, the Lebanese army has begun its deployment in the area, but the situation remains tense with accusations of ongoing Israeli violations.
