OpenAI Expands GPT-4.1 Access, Deprecates 4.5 Preview

OpenAI is expanding availability of its advanced GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini language models in ChatGPT, starting with Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, and planning to include Enterprise and Education users soon. GPT-4.1, which was initially released as an API-only model for developers and enterprises, delivers notable advancements in coding, instruction-following, and long-context understanding, consistently outperforming previous models such as GPT-4o and GPT-4.5. GPT-4.1 mini now serves as the fallback model for all users, including those on the free tier, offering improved performance and lower latency. OpenAI is launching a Safety Evaluations Hub to publish internal model safety assessments in response to industry criticism over prior reporting standards. The company is also deprecating GPT-4.5 Preview to focus on the more efficient GPT-4.1 series.
