North Korea Rejects Talks, Dismisses South Korean Overtures
North Korea, through Kim Jong-un's sister Kim Yo-jong, has firmly rejected any dialogue or proposals from South Korea following the election of President Lee Jae-myung, dismissing his efforts to mend ties as ineffective and insincere due to South Korea's continued alliance with the United States. Despite Seoul's conciliatory moves such as halting anti-North broadcasts and repatriating North Korean fishermen, Pyongyang views these gestures as insufficient and sees South Korea as an irreconcilable enemy, with its hostile perception described as irreversible. Kim Yo-jong emphasized that the North has no interest in talks, stating that there is neither a reason to meet nor an issue to discuss with South Korea, and criticized Seoul for pursuing confrontation under the guise of engagement. The North also disparaged South Korea’s Unification Ministry and dismissed hopes for inter-Korean cooperation at upcoming international events, framing the Lee administration as no different from its predecessor in maintaining a confrontational stance. South Korea maintains it will continue efforts to reduce hostility and establish peace on the peninsula, acknowledging the deep mistrust between the two Koreas. Overall, North Korea’s official statements underscore a hardened position that rejects dialogue and cooperation despite South Korea's overtures.
