Ukrainian Rabbi's Son Killed in Combat

Matisyahu Samborsky, the adopted son of Rabbi Moshe Azman, was killed in combat while serving in the Ukrainian army, just weeks after the birth of his daughter. Rabbi Azman confirmed his son's death following a week of uncertainty, during which Samborsky was reported missing after last being in contact on July 17. Matisyahu, originally named Anton Samborsky, was adopted by the rabbi in 2002 and given a Hebrew name in honor of the Maccabees. He was drafted shortly after his daughter's birth and sent to the front lines following a brief training period. A memorial service is scheduled for September 12 at the Central Synagogue in Kyiv, where he will be buried at the Jewish cemetery. Samborsky is survived by his wife and infant daughter.
