Union Pacific Opens Fourth Intermodal Terminal, Expands High-Speed Midwest Service
Union Pacific Railroad has launched its Kansas City Intermodal Terminal (KCIT), the fourth intermodal facility it has opened since 2021, aimed at expanding capacity and improving freight transit times in the Midwest. Strategically located near major highways and interstates, KCIT serves domestic and international shipments including grains, consumer goods, refrigerated products, and auto parts, facilitating a shift from truck to rail to reduce highway congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. The terminal includes advanced features such as paved parking lots, additional working tracks, and precision gate technology to enhance truck entry and exit efficiency. Concurrently, Union Pacific is introducing an expedited intermodal service connecting Southern California’s Inland Empire directly to Chicago with transit times as fast as three days, offering a truck-competitive alternative. The company is also relocating its Kansas City domestic service from Long Beach to the City of Industry terminal in Southern California to leverage its premium expedited network, resulting in significantly faster transit times. These initiatives reflect Union Pacific's commitment to providing faster, more reliable, and cost-effective freight solutions while accommodating future growth and improving logistics planning.
