Indonesia Bans iPhone 16, Watch Series 10 Over Compliance

Indonesia has banned the sale and use of Apple's iPhone 16 due to the company's failure to meet local investment and content requirements. Apple has not fulfilled its commitment to invest 1.71 trillion rupiah, having only invested 1.48 trillion rupiah, which affects the required 40% local content certification for selling their products in the country. This decision means that any iPhone 16 in use or sold is considered illegal, and consumers are discouraged from purchasing the device abroad. The ban also impacts other recent Apple releases like the Watch Series 10. Apple has established developer academies in Indonesia but has yet to build manufacturing facilities, unlike competitors like Samsung and Xiaomi, which have complied with local regulations. The situation underscores Indonesia's strategy of using trade restrictions to encourage local production, although this approach has had varied success in the past.
