Niger Signs Nuclear Cooperation Deal with Russia Amid Sahel Strategic Shift

Niger and Russia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation in civilian nuclear energy, including uranium mining, nuclear power plant construction, nuclear medicine, and workforce training. This agreement is part of Russia’s broader strategy to build a nuclear development ecosystem in the Sahel region, also involving military-led governments in Mali and Burkina Faso, and reflects Moscow's growing influence as these nations distance themselves from Western powers. Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev emphasized the goal of creating a comprehensive infrastructure for peaceful atomic energy in Niger, beyond uranium extraction, to improve electricity access for its population. The deal was signed during high-level meetings in Niamey involving Niger’s government officials and Russian representatives, and it includes plans for joint projects in energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and mining. This cooperation comes amid shifts in regional alliances following Niger's 2023 military coup, with Russia providing military support and diplomatic backing while Western countries have reduced engagement. The agreement marks a significant milestone in Moscow's deepening partnerships in Africa’s Sahel, aiming to expand its geopolitical presence through technological and energy collaborations.
