Transgender Woman Charged in Postal Worker Murder
A 36-year-old postal worker, Ray Hodges, was fatally stabbed in a Harlem deli following a dispute over who was next to order a sandwich on January 2, 2025. Jaia Cruz, a 24-year-old transgender woman with a history of knife violence, allegedly attacked Hodges after a verbal argument escalated, despite attempts to de-escalate the confrontation. Witnesses reported that Cruz spat in Hodges' face, which led to the fatal stabbing. Cruz has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bail. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed Hodges' identity and emphasized their priority on employee safety. A memorial has been set up by neighbors outside Hodges’ home, honoring his dedication to his work and community.
