UN World Food Program Warns Gaza at Breaking Point Amid Aid Distribution Changes
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has declared that Gaza is "at breaking point" due to severe food shortages affecting half a million people amid extensive destruction and a blockade by Israel. WFP Director Cindy McCain, after visiting Gaza and meeting starving children, called for a massive expansion of humanitarian aid and the urgent revival of the WFP's network of more than 200 food distribution points to prevent famine. McCain and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have agreed to accelerate and maintain the flow of humanitarian goods, though Israel insists on using the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) for aid distribution instead of established UN mechanisms. The Israeli army plans to open two new GHF-operated distribution centers in southern Gaza, closing the existing one near the Egyptian border, aiming to bypass UN agencies to prevent aid from reaching Hamas. Aid organizations criticize this shift, emphasizing the need for safe routes and permanent access to meet the scale of the crisis. The situation remains critical as humanitarian efforts strive to alleviate widespread desperation and starvation within the coastal enclave.
