Cycling legend Eddy Merckx, 79, has suffered a fractured hip after a fall while biking near Hombeek, Mechelen. The incident, described by his wife Claudine as a 'stupid accident' with no other road users involved, resulted in Merckx experiencing immediate pain and necessitated a hospital visit. He will undergo surgery at a facility in Herentals, the same hospital where fellow cyclist Remco Evenepoel was treated recently. Merckx, known for his exceptional career achievements including 11 Grand Tour victories and three World Championships, has faced health challenges in the past, including an intestinal obstruction earlier this year.
