Former Chinese Official Zhong Yang Sentenced to 13 Years

Zhong Yang, a 52-year-old former governor of Qiannan prefecture in southwest China, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and fined one million yuan for misconduct, including having sexual relations with 58 subordinates and accepting approximately 60 million yuan (around ₹71 crore) in bribes. Known as the 'beautiful governor', Zhong was dismissed from her position in April 2023 following allegations of corruption and sexual misconduct. Reports indicate that her relationships were often conducted under the guise of work, with many subordinates participating due to her authority or the advantages she offered. Zhong, who has never married and has no children, previously gained recognition for her charitable efforts aimed at supporting farmers and the elderly. However, a documentary revealed her unethical practices, including favoritism in awarding government contracts. The case has drawn significant attention to issues of corruption and gender dynamics within Chinese politics.
