Virginia Tech Forms Expert Committee for Critical Head Football Coach Search

Virginia Tech has formed an eight-member search committee to identify the next head football coach, marking one of the most important hires in the program's history. The committee includes notable figures such as Bruce Arians, a 1974 Virginia Tech graduate and Super Bowl-winning NFL coach, former defensive coordinator Bud Foster, and wide receiver Eddie Royal. The university's athletic director, Whit Babcock, clarified that the new head coach will share authority with a general manager in a split leadership model, similar to structures at Ole Miss and Oklahoma, reflecting a shift from full coaching autonomy. Virginia Tech has also committed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in new funding for its athletics department through the end of the decade to support the program. The committee aims to hire a head coach first, preferably with experience in the transfer portal and NIL, before filling other staff positions. This strategic hire is seen as critical to the future success of Virginia Tech football following recent coaching changes.
