Derek Pfaff Undergoes Historic Face Transplant

Derek Pfaff, a 30-year-old who survived a suicide attempt in 2014, underwent one of the world's first face transplants at Mayo Clinic after enduring 58 facial reconstructive surgeries over a decade. His life was forever changed when he shot himself, resulting in severe facial injuries that left him unable to perform basic functions such as eating and speaking. The groundbreaking surgery, which took over 50 hours and involved more than 80 medical professionals, successfully reconstructed approximately 85% of his face using donor tissue.
