Historic England funds 30 projects to celebrate working-class heritage

Historic England's Everyday Heritage programme is awarding almost £500,000 to 30 community-led projects across England that celebrate working-class histories, particularly in rural and coastal areas. Notable initiatives include a project in North Yorkshire focusing on the history of lidos in working-class communities and another in Scarborough exploring local history related to a prison and workhouse. In Norfolk and Suffolk, projects will document the legacy of the Pontin's holiday camp in Hemsby and the railway history in Melton Constable. In Sussex and Kent, new ceremonial traditions and multimedia storytelling will highlight local community contributions, like the impact of Shoreham Harbour and the history of the Royal School for Deaf Children in Margate. Duncan Wilson from Historic England emphasized the importance of recognizing and sharing these untold stories to foster community pride and belonging. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to uncovering and celebrating the diverse narratives that shape local identities.
