Himachal Pradesh ministers Anirudh Singh and Vikramaditya Singh have accused the previous BJP government of funding the illegal construction of a mosque in Sanjauli, alleging that ₹2 lakh was sanctioned in 2019 and an additional ₹12 lakh for its construction. They emphasized that the unauthorized expansion took place during the COVID-19 pandemic when the BJP was in power, and pointed out that the then Urban Development Minister had even written to the Waqf Board regarding the mosque. Amidst ongoing protests led by right-wing groups demanding the mosque's demolition, the Sanjauli Mosque Committee has voluntarily offered to seal or demolish the unauthorized structure. The ministers criticized the BJP for politicizing the issue and using it for electoral gains, urging for calm and communal harmony in the state. They assured that any illegal constructions would be addressed according to the law, as the government prioritizes maintaining peace. The controversy has also highlighted the broader issue of illegal constructions in Shimla, where over 34,000 illegal structures have emerged in recent years.
