Meta Signs Geothermal Deal to Power New Mexico Data Center
Meta Platforms has signed a deal with New Mexico-based startup XGS Energy to develop a 150 megawatt advanced geothermal power plant aimed at powering Meta's Los Lunas data center by 2030, supporting its AI expansion and sustainability goals. This partnership reflects Meta's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and securing a steady, low-carbon electricity supply amid rising power demands from AI data centers. Advanced geothermal technology, unlike traditional geothermal methods, uses closed-loop systems to minimize water loss and enable energy production from hot, dry rocks, exploiting New Mexico's vast untapped geothermal potential of approximately 160,000 megawatts. Meta's collaboration with XGS Energy is part of a broader trend among tech giants, including Google, to invest in clean energy sources such as geothermal to meet the increasing electricity needs of AI infrastructure while reducing carbon footprints. The geothermal power generated will feed into the regional grid, indirectly supplying Meta's data center operations, and represents about 4% of the U.S. geothermal production capacity. This move highlights the growing role of next-generation geothermal energy in supporting domestic data center growth and advancing AI technologies sustainably.
