Tatyana Tomashova Stripped of Olympic Silver Medal
Tatyana Tomashova has been stripped of her silver medal from the women's 1500m at the 2012 London Olympics, becoming the fifth athlete disqualified from what has been labeled one of the 'dirtiest' races in history. Following a 10-year ban imposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for anti-doping violations, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced her result was annulled after analysis from the Moscow anti-doping lab revealed she had used banned substances. Tomashova initially finished fourth but was elevated to silver after the disqualifications of the first and second finishers for blood doping. This ruling allows Ethiopian Abeba Aregawi to claim the silver and American Shannon Rowbury to receive the bronze. The ongoing fallout from this race has led to scrutiny of doping practices in athletics, with several other athletes, including Belarus’s Natallia Kareiva and Russia’s Yekaterina Kostetskaya, also facing sanctions. The International Olympic Committee will now update its medal records accordingly.
