Cyclone Chido Causes Destruction in Mayotte

Cyclone Chido has wreaked havoc on Mayotte, a French Indian Ocean territory, leading to at least 14 confirmed deaths and significant destruction of shantytowns and infrastructure. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau described the situation as 'dramatic' and warned that the death toll could rise as assessments are conducted. The cyclone, packing winds of up to 226 km/h (140 mph), has also impacted the nearby Comoros islands, causing flooding and damage. Emergency services are mobilizing to assist the affected population, with around 100,000 people living in precarious conditions prior to the cyclone. Reinforcements from France are being sent to provide humanitarian aid and medical support. Officials are particularly concerned about access to food, water, and sanitation as recovery efforts begin.
