NY Gov Hochul Renames Harlem Subway Station For Malcolm X
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation renaming the 110th Street-Central Park North subway station to 110th Street-Malcolm X Plaza to honor the civil rights leader's deep ties to Harlem, where he lived for over a decade before his assassination in 1965. The renaming was part of the city's 51st Harlem Week celebrations and coincided with the designation of the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District as a region of cultural significance ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2025. Malcolm X's daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz, attended the ceremony, emphasizing her father's courage and commitment to freedom and equality. The renaming joins other Harlem landmarks bearing Malcolm X's name, including the Masjid Malcolm Shabazz mosque, which evolved from the Muhammad’s Temple of Islam No. 7 that Malcolm X founded. Governor Hochul highlighted Harlem's historical role in civil rights and culture, noting icons like Zora Neale Hurston and Duke Ellington, and Malcolm X's transformative journey from black separatism to embracing broader human rights after his pilgrimage to Mecca. The event reflected on Malcolm X's lasting legacy as a revolutionary figure whose advocacy reshaped the fight for racial justice.
