GM Expands Battery Use for EVs and Energy Storage
General Motors (GM) has expanded its partnership with Redwood Materials to supply both new and second-life EV batteries for use in large-scale energy storage systems, supporting growing electricity demand from AI data centers and the U.S. power grid. Operational energy storage systems in Nevada are already utilizing GM batteries to power AI infrastructure. This initiative complements existing efforts by GM and Redwood to recycle manufacturing scrap and highlights a shared commitment to sustainable, domestically produced energy solutions. Simultaneously, GM and LG Energy Solution will upgrade their Spring Hill, Tennessee, Ultium Cells plant to produce more affordable lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries by 2027, diversifying battery chemistries and lowering EV costs. These combined strategies underscore GM’s approach to maximizing battery lifecycles, supporting grid modernization, and expanding its range of competitively priced EVs. The moves come as electricity demand surges due to AI and electrification, positioning GM as a leader in both clean transportation and energy storage.
