49ers promote Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator, replace QB coach Griese
The San Francisco 49ers have officially promoted Klay Kubiak to the role of offensive coordinator, a position that remained vacant for two seasons following Mike McDaniel's departure. Kubiak, who has been with the team for five years in various coaching roles, was promoted after head coach Kyle Shanahan complied with the Rooney Rule by interviewing minority candidates. Additionally, Mick Lombardi has been appointed as the new quarterbacks coach, succeeding Brian Griese, who stepped down to take a break from coaching. Shanahan also announced other staff changes, including the hiring of new coaches for defensive and special teams roles. This restructuring comes in response to the team's disappointing 2024 season, as they seek to improve performance moving forward. Meanwhile, receiver Deebo Samuel has requested permission to seek a trade after expressing a desire for a fresh start.
