Air India 787 Crash Kills 274 in Ahmedabad
On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed into a residential area and a medical college hostel near Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff for London, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and at least 33 on the ground. The crash is among the deadliest in Indian aviation history and claimed the lives of notable individuals, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani. The sole survivor, a British national, was hospitalized after escaping the wreckage. Investigators from India, the US, and the UK, who have recovered the black box, are focusing on mechanical failures, particularly a loss of thrust after departure. Air India and parent Tata Group have pledged transparency, cooperation, and substantial compensation for victims' families, establishing assistance centers to support the bereaved. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and met with survivors and officials, highlighting the national significance of the tragedy.
